There’s nothing quite like the magic of the holidays in Boston, and seeing Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker performed by Boston Ballet at the Citizens Bank Opera House is a tradition that perfectly encapsulates the season.
From the moment the curtain rose, it was evident why this production has captivated audiences, myself included, year after year. It’s a dazzling blend of artistry, athleticism, and festive wonder that brings Tchaikovsky’s timeless score to life in a way that’s both enchanting and unforgettable.

A Moment for the Venue
Any visit to The Citizens Bank Boston House is an experience in its own right as the theater is an architectural marvel that is even more breathtaking during the holiday season. Whether inside the lobby, or in the theater itself, with its ornate architecture and warm lighting, you’ll find the perfect backdrop for the evening’s magic.
Boston Ballet’s The Nutcracker
Once the performance began, the theater transforms to make the audience feel so immersed in the iconic Christmas story, that it truly feels like stepping into a dream. From Clara’s charming Christmas Eve celebration to the exhilarating battle with the Mouse King and the enchanting journey to the Kingdom of the Sweets, each scene unfolded with stunning beauty. The sets and costumes designed by Robert Perdziola, were beautiful with Act I showcasing warm, nostalgic hues that brought Clara’s family home to life, while Act II exploded in vibrant colors that truly transported the audience to the whimsical world of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
Boston Ballet’s dancers brought technical precision and emotional depth to their roles, creating moments of magic on stage. Ji Young Chae, who danced the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy, was breathtaking, and her flawless execution of the grand pas de deux left me in awe. Jeffrey Cirio, in the role of the Nutcracker Prince, was equally captivating, balancing strength and grace in his movements. Every dancer, from the tiniest Boston Ballet School students to the seasoned professionals, contributed to the spectacle, making the production feel both grand and personal at the same time.

The snow scene stood out me as one of the most visually stunning moments, with the ensemble of “snowflakes” moving in perfect harmony, creating an ethereal and dreamlike effect. Meanwhile, the Russian dancers are a fan favorite and once again brought energy and exhilaration, showcasing incredible athleticism and earning some of the loudest applause of the evening.
Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, performed live by the Boston Ballet Orchestra under the direction of Music Director Mischa Santora, was nothing short of spectacular. The orchestra’s mastery added depth and emotion to every scene, from the delicate strains of Clara’s dance with the Nutcracker to the bold, thunderous crescendos of the battle scene.
